Balls or NO Balls

Today Travis and I got into a long discussion about whether we will keep Henry's testicles attached or not. It started at Travis's work when I went to meet him for dinner, since he stays late on Tuesday. Apparently his co-workers (all men of course) had convinced him that it is not right to rob a "man" of his goods. I had lots of good reasons why you should remove the balls. Number one: I am so sick of seeing his lipstick, red rocket or whatever you want to call it and if a little snip snip can shield my eyes for the one eyed snake looking at me then I think it is worth every penny. Secondly, he will not have those huge gross hair balls between his legs that everyone would secretly talk about whenever they are over. Third he won't be as hyper. Four he won't lift his leg. Five he will not be as aggressive towards other male dogs. Lastly...for all you Price is Right fans...Bob says spay and neuter your cats and dogs! I think it is very important as an owner of a DOG... that you snip the balls so he doesn't go running off and getting some dog pregnant and then we get charged with puppy support!
To make this life change a fun event I propose having a ball cutting party! We will invite our friends over and cut a cake (in the shape or design of balls or course), play bin the balls on the donkey and just sit around and pay tribute to the balls Henry once had. If you vote for no balls...you could be invited to this memorable occasion!

Travis felt that I wouldn't be able to correctly state his point of view so for the first time Travis is going to make his entry on why the balls must belong to Henry....

Katie laid the introduction well to this very serious debate. I must say that I was all for snipping the balls off of ole Henry when he came of age...but I had a change of heart today while talking with those male coworkers Katie mentioned. One of my sergeants, a native of Louisiana, informed me that a pure bred male dog is often sought for their sperm and PAID a stud fee. Generally $100, or the pick of the litter. Wow I thought, that is a considerable amount of cash, and because he is a male dog its not like we have to have a pregnant emotional mom dog around. Just Henry, who would probably be more happy and relaxed after the whole ordeal. Not to mention Katie and I would have 100 more dollars to go out to sushi or perhaps a nice date night. In my mind I was imagining all sorts of ways to spend that extra money, and all we had to do was not PAY to cut off his balls. Hmm...that sounds like a win win to me. The only negatives me and my male co workers could come up with--none. I thought of a few reservations Katie might have, namely that he would pee on more things, but he already does. Also, Katie says she doesn't want to see his red rocket, however I must say that this will not end when his balls get cut off. Charlie has not had his balls for a year and still greets us in his excitement with the lipstick, or whenever he licks himself. In conclusion, I hope you agree with me after weighing the evidence, that this is in fact a win win. Also, my coworkers said they want to picket outside our house with signs saying, "Save Henry's Balls!" So join the cause.

But I tried to be reasonable so I told Travis I would ask my blog peeps to vote! So please come to the polls and give your vote for balls or NO balls! Don't be shy! This is a big decision and we need as many opinions as we can get to make the right one!

  2. Its funny Andy and I just had this conversation about rather or not to circumsise Calvin...no actually we didnt because that is ridiculous! SNIP THE NUTS! You think puppy pee is the same as a 100 lb. dog peeing...no! This is good practice for you guys in making decisions but Katie is totally right. Maybe Travis if your so connected to his balls you could ask the dr. if he could save them for you in a jar- its a good comprise!

  3. You communist people are ridiculous how can you make the decision to just take away a dogs hopes and dreams in one swift snip. The dog will never be the same and he will never look at either of you in the same light. Bonus though Dakota will be more of a dog than he will ever be. KEEP THEM

  4. Since I volunteer at Animal Rescue, and see way too many neglected, abused, sick and pregnant dogs, the only solution to the problem is to neuter your pet. Everyone needs to be a responsible pet owner. In reality, how many people are going to be calling Henry for his "stud" service? Seriouly, it isn't going to happen. Get the dog neutered.

  5. Travis, seriously? There are dogs that get killed every minute because they can't find homes. I think the stats just in the central valley are like 6,000 dogs killed in one year!!! And you want to bring MORE dogs into this world??? Do the right thing: Neuter him. Not only is it the responsible thing to do--and will help save a poor helpless dog's life--but it will also make him easier to deal with when he is older. Win win. Trust me he won't care or recognize they are gone.

  6. Now Jeff is weighing in.....

CUT THEM OFF!! (1) It is the responsible thing to do;(2) It will make life easier (no peeing, no agression, etc); (3) You may make a hundred dollars (emphasis on MAY), but that hundred dollars will come at the price of the death of many dogs.

  7. Travis-
OMG...I just saw myself with the blood of innocent animals in one hand and Henry's balls in the other. Looks like I am out numbered here. I am still thinking about it. I know there is got to be more support in keeping the balls out there...I can't be the only one!

  8. OK, full disclosure-we have an almost 10 year old Golden Retriever (Gunner) and we had him neutered as a puppy. However, I am not necessarily in favor of neutering all dogs (if we did that, how would we get more?).
Our decision to neuter Gunner included controlling his territory marking (it hasn't), stop his domination/humping others (it hasn't), take away his urge to roam (it hasn't), and we did not want, need or plan on studding him or getting descendants from him in the future (it has).
We will reexamine this with the next dog we get, perhaps we will change our minds the next time.
For you guys, the only reason I believe you should neuter him is if know 100% that you will not stud him or want puppy descendants from him ever in the future. The other reasons may or may not happen (see Gunner above!).
If you do decide to neuter, have you considered neuticles (http://www.neuticles.com/)?

  9. OH MY GOSH!!! I can not believe that you would put this on the internet... wait actually I totally can! I am on your side Katie! sorry Travis but their are tons of dogs and its not like he is a rare bred, I am sure he is a great dog completely worthy of having some pups but their are already too many dogs out there! Cut them off!

PS: I read this whole interaction to mom, she was stunned you would post this but she in on Katie's side :)

  10. HAhahahaha!! Oh Katie, love your blog, thanks for the invite.Your family is definitely entertaining, interesting, and lovely. Travis, haha, nice emotional and finical appeal, very you.

We actually faced the same debate with our dogs. NoNo's neutered (by the previous owner), but not YoYo or LuLu. We actually tried to breed YoYo twice(but the lady dog BaoBao rejected him; it's sad YoYo actually likes her very much and is extremely protective of her, but she just growls at him whenever he gets near).

Anyhow... even though the debate with our dogs remained unresolved till this day...last year, on my birthday, there was a mountain fire and we had to evacuate our home. After staying at a hotel for the evening we had to make temporary arrangements, and put the doggies in doggie day care. Well, if your dogs are not neutered, they either do not qualify for some of the day cares, or have to stay in a separate room/cage away from the rest of the animals. We felt bad for LuLu and YoYo, and did not want NoNo to be out without his family, so we upgraded the three of them together in a room, separated from the rest of the dogs. They were frightened and can't even interact with new friends, it was sad. After that event,I lean more towards Katie's side, especially since your lifestyles are quite adventures, and you won't have time or energy to really breed Henry and care for the puppies.

Even if none of the benefits of snipping the balls happen (i.e. peeing everywhere, more relaxed personality),for convenient emergencies and interaction with other puppies, it is still better to cut. Regarding the breeding debate: I love puppies, but personally I don't think anyone should breed if they can't personally ensure that each new puppy will be provided with a good home, and no accidental puppies without supports are created in the process. Regarding the extra $100 for romantic wonders... you can create priceless gifts that's more romantic, meaningful, and memorable. The sushi dinner will be fun but will fade as the years go by and the luxury dinners increase... but without the extra cash for a easy purchasable date, I'm sure you two creative couple can come up with a special memorable evening that will last a lifetime.

After weighing the evidence, and given your adventurous lifestyles... I vote no balls, safe for emergencies and better memories =)
